Rehoming Your Pet
We know that deciding to rehome your pet isn’t easy. Life can bring unexpected changes, and sometimes the best way to care for your animal is to find them a new, loving home. Our goal is to offer support, resources, and guidance during this difficult time.
Before You Rehome: Let’s Explore Your Options
Behavior Problems?
If your pet is having behavior challenges, you’re not alone. Many common issues can be improved with the right training. Please contact us at (325) 372-PETS to learn how to get a free training session.
Struggling Financially?
If supplies or veterinary care are the concern, we may be able to help. Click on our Pet Assistance page to sign up for food and supplies to help keep your pet in your home.
Please keep in mind:
Our rescue operates at full capacity most of the time, and space is limited. We prioritize urgent cases involving neglect, cruelty, or emergencies. Rehoming your pet yourself allows for a smoother transition and is typically far less stressful for the animal than being placed in multiple foster homes.
How to Responsibly Rehome Your Pet
Give Yourself Time
Finding the right home may take several weeks. Start the process early and don’t rush—your pet deserves a safe and loving match.
Prepare Your Pet
Make sure your pet is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well-groomed. This not only helps them stay healthy but also makes them more appealing to potential adopters.
Spread the Word
Ask family, friends, coworkers, neighbors—anyone who might help share your pet’s story. Post on social media, community bulletin boards, and local online groups like Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor.
Where to Post
We recommend using trusted platforms such as:
These sites allow you to create a profile and communicate directly with potential adopters, giving you more control over who your pet goes to.
Tips for Creating a Great Adoption Profile
Take Great Photos
- Use natural light and focus on your pet’s face.
- Include photos of your pet being playful, cuddly, or interacting with people or other animals.
- Keep the background simple so your pet stands out.
Write a Honest, Heartfelt Bio
- Share your pet’s personality—are they energetic, calm, snuggly, or smart?
- Mention what kind of home they’d thrive in (kids, other pets, indoor/outdoor).
- Be positive but realistic so the match is a good fit for both your pet and their new family.
